From Community Voices to Community Space
In 2023, the Flourishing Neighborhood Index (FNI) survey conducted in the Walnut Neighborhood provided valuable insight into what matters most to residents. One message stood out clearly: the neighborhood needed a welcoming park and gathering space where families, children, and neighbors could connect.
That feedback sparked a community-driven effort. Through the Walnut Neighborhood Association as well as the Walnut Park Action Team the vision for a neighborhood park began to take shape. Together, residents and partners shared their ideas, priorities, and hopes for the space, ensuring the park would reflect the needs and character of the community. Today, that vision is becoming a reality, with the project now nearly fully funded with just under $300,000 dollars raised and 5 vacant properties acquired to build on.
Every element of the park has been thoughtfully shaped by resident input. The park will include a shelter for gathering, safe rubber mulch play surfaces, an interactive walkway, a spinning play feature, a saucer swing, play equipment for children ages 2–12, and a privacy fence.
Located in the heart of the Walnut Neighborhood, this park will represent much more than a new place to play. It is a testament to what can happen when residents have the opportunity to share their voices and work together toward a common goal. What began as a need identified through the Flourishing Neighborhood Index has grown into a community-led project that will serve generations to come. It is a lasting symbol of the Walnut Neighborhood's strength, collaboration, and commitment to creating a place where everyone can flourish.
This project would not be possible without the generosity of our grant partners, donors, community supporters, and the dedicated residents who helped bring this vision to life. We are grateful for everyone who has invested in the future of the Walnut Neighborhood, and we look forward to sharing updates as construction plans continue to move forward!
