The True “Miracle of Marigolds”

Each year, as spring arrives, neighbors in Walnut come together to plant marigolds along street corners throughout the neighborhood. This annual tradition not only brightens the community with color, but also brings residents together through shared care and neighborhood pride.

One neighbor, Estee, reflected on this year’s event:

“The Miracle of Marigolds is blossoming once again in the historic Walnut Neighborhood, bringing neighbors together and brightening street corners one flower at a time. This beloved beautification effort is more than just planting flowers; it’s a celebration of community pride, connection, and shared care for the places we call home.

Thanks to a generous microgrant from Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity, this year’s project is helping residents transform everyday corners into vibrant, welcoming spaces. With shovels in hand and smiles all around, neighbors are planting cheerful marigolds that will bloom throughout the season, symbolizing growth, resilience, and the power of working together.

The day begins with a warm and welcoming community breakfast at Harvest Vineyard Church, where participants gather to connect, share stories, and fuel up for the morning ahead. From there, neighbors head out to their own corners, rolling up their sleeves to plant the flowers that will bring color and life to the neighborhood.

The Miracle of Marigolds continues to show how small acts (like planting a flower) can have a beautiful, lasting impact.”
