Legacy & History
The Historic Walnut Neighborhood Association (WNA) was convened by Cathy Young, a concerned pastor who worked at First Presbyterian Church, in 1994 following a tragic funeral that she conducted for the death of a resident who had lived at the Walnut Court Apartments. Her hope was to create a safer neighborhood.
Since then, Annette Swan, resident on East Park Ave, served as neighborhood president, and Laura Hoy, who now resides on Almond Street, succeeded her.
Esther Meuer-Valtchev became Neighborhood Association President in 2024 and also lives in Annette’s old house.
Of the many rich traditions in the Walnut Neighborhood, a favorite is the annual marigold planting in the springtime, called “Miracle of Marigolds,” that allows folks to pitch in with making the street corners and sidewalks beautiful.
